Before the World Blows (also billed as Before the World Blows: The Abi and Alan Experiment) is the collaborative studio album by Erykah Badu and The Alchemist, released digitally today. It is Badu’s first full project since the 2015 mixtape But You Caint Use My Phone and her first studio album since New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) in 2010. The 16-track record runs about 63 minutes and blends neo-soul, jazz, funk, blues, and underground hip-hop. Badu executive-produced and co-produced with Alchemist; they recorded over 18 months between Dallas and Los Angeles. The project started when Badu told her collaborator Cold Cris she had always wanted to rap over Alchemist’s beat for Mobb Deep’s “The Realest” (1999). They were introduced, Alchemist sent a batch of instrumentals, and Badu rebuilt many of them with kalimba, extra chords, and drums. “Next 2 U”. Features include Westside Gunn who appears twice. Other guests include Earl Sweatshirt, Thundercat, Steve Lacy, DRAM, Kamasi Washington, Joi, and DJ Creole Princess.
