Her death was confirmed on August 16–17, 2026, by her father, Skip Panettiere, in a statement shared through her representative/publicist with multiple outlets including The New York Times, CNN, BBC, Reuters, USA Today, and others. The statement read: β€œIt is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her β€” and to the millions who watched her onscreen. We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”

Panettiere rose to prominence as a child actor (appearing in commercials as an infant and later in films like Remember the Titans and voicing Dot in A Bug’s Life). She gained widespread recognition as Claire Bennet, the indestructible cheerleader, on NBC’s Heroes (2006–2010), and as country singer Juliette Barnes on ABC’s Nashville. She also played Kirby Reed in Scream 4 (2011) and returned for Scream VI (2023). She was a two-time Golden Globe nominee.

In May 2026 she released her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she discussed struggles with postpartum depression, substance abuse, addiction recovery, losing custody of her daughter, and other personal challenges. She is survived by her daughter, Kaya (with former partner Wladimir Klitschko). Her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at age 28.
