YAOSONER’s Honorable Standout Albums of 2025
These releases truly stood out to me this year as exceptional bodies of work that deserved far more attention than they received upon dropping. The artistry, lyricism, and production across these projects are top-tier, yet they flew under the radar for many listeners. That’s why I’m highlighting them as my personal Honorable Standout Albums of 2025—hidden gems that showcase real hip-hop craftsmanship in a crowded landscape

Dave East – Karma 4 (Released October 15, 2025)

Dave East delivered a massive, introspective return with the fourth installment in his beloved Karma series, coming five years after Karma 3. This 26-track album (later expanded to 33 in the deluxe edition) is a gritty testament to his growth as a Harlem storyteller, blending raw street narratives with reflections on loss, success, and perseverance. Produced by heavyweights like Harry Fraud, Nicholas Craven, and Mike & Keys, it captures that classic mixtape energy while feeling like a fully realized album. Standout features from Stove God Cooks, Mozzy, Key Glock, a posthumous Nipsey Hussle verse, and others add depth, with tracks like “Demon,” “Runnin’,” and “12 Months” hitting hard with East’s razor-sharp pen and raspy delivery. It’s hungry, focused, and painfully honest—easily one of his strongest efforts, yet it didn’t get the widespread buzz it deserved amid bigger releases.
Jay Worthy – Once Upon A Time 1 & 2 (Released September 26 and October 10, 2025)

Jay Worthy kept the West Coast pimp-rap vibe alive with this ambitious double-disc project, dropping the two parts just weeks apart for a seamless, star-studded experience. Rooted in laid-back G-funk and luxurious lowrider aesthetics, it bridges classic ’90s sounds with modern luxury rap, featuring an insane lineup including Larry June, Bun B, Wiz Khalifa, Spice 1, DJ Muggs, Curren$y, B-Legit, and even George Clinton. The production is colorful and summery, with smooth, drum-heavy beats that let Worthy’s charismatic, player-centric flows shine. Tracks like “96 Big Body,” “Jive 95,” and “Daytons” evoke cruising boulevards and old-school charisma, while Worthy gets more introspective than usual on relationships and the grind. It’s a vibrant, feel-good collection that’s perfect for repeat listens, but as a more niche West Coast offering, it sadly got overlooked in favor of flashier mainstream drops.
CRIMEAPPLE x V Don – Bulletproof Chicken (Released September 3, 2025)

This underground powerhouse collab is pure boom-bap excellence: CRIMEAPPLE’s bilingual, razor-sharp wordplay over V Don’s cinematic, moody production creates a gritty, high-grade street rap masterpiece. Clocking in at 12 tight tracks, it’s packed with vivid narratives, mafioso bars, and intricate rhymes, with guest spots from T.F, Primo Profit, and Bruiser Wolf adding extra flavor. Songs like “Scrape The Pot,” “Victor Charlie,” “8 Wings,” and the title track deliver that raw, unfiltered East Coast energy—think soulful samples, heavy drums, and unapologetic lyricism. Both artists are at their peak here, elevating the underground scene without chasing trends. It’s concise, replayable, and criminally slept-on, especially in a year dominated by bigger names; true heads know this is one of the hardest-hitting projects of 2025.
In a year stacked with high-profile drops and viral moments, these three projects remind us why we fell in love with hip-hop in the first place: authentic storytelling, impeccable beats, and that undeniable hunger. If you slept on them, do yourself a favor and dive in now—these are the ones that’|I age like fine wine while the trends fade. Shoutout to the real ones keeping the culture alive. What are your underrated picks from 2025?
