NEW ALBUM: De La Soul “Cabin In The Sky”

Clocking in at over 70 minutes across 20 tracks (including an intro), the album serves as both a tribute to Trugoy-featuring his vocals and production on several cuts—and a vibrant continuation of De La Soul’s signature sunny, eclectic sound. Posdnuos described it as
“therapy and celebration at the same time,” blending themes of loss, joy, and the afterlife with their trademark plunderphonics and surrealist flair.
The title draws from the 1943 musical film Cabin(starring Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington), evoking a metaphorical
“cabin” as a dreamlike space for reunion beyond this world—free from grief, gentrification, or rent.
Tracks like the title song grapple with raw disbelief over Trugoy’s death (“still in disbelief, lost my brother Dave”) while injecting humor and hope, insisting that true bonds “can never be severed.” It’s loosely conceptual around death and transcendence, kicked off by a spoken-word intro from Giancarlo Esposito, but never descends into heaviness. Instead, it radiates
“full-saturation Technicolor” warmth, from effervescent Natalie Cole samples to Maseo’s jovial ad-libs. Features include Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Supa Dave West, and Jake One, Nas, Common, Slick Rick, and Killer Mike.
